MARIA
I'm a busy girl cuz I've got lots of friends
I meet them on the corner and they take me for rides
Windows rolled down, a shiny breeze
One hand on the wheel, the other hand on my knee,
and they say
Maria you are special
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight
They kept me back in 3rd grade, they talked to my ma
They told her I was too slow, that I would not get far
Special's what they called me and they put me in a special room
With lots of funny kids and the teacher kept me late in the afternoon
and he said
Maria you are special
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight
My daddy was a salesman but he never went to work
He'd sit in front of the tv when I'd get home from school, and he'd say,
"Maria bring the bottle and I'll share half with you
and I won't tell your ma, if you do what I say to do"
and he'd say
Maria you are special
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight
Last night I dreamed that the streets became the ocean
And I was drowning in a sea of cars
I reached out my hands as high as they would go
And I pulled myself up to a sky so calm
This morning I woke up to flooded streets
I opened my window to let in the breeze
I was looking down at the pavement and looking up at the sky
Leaning out my window, wondering if I could fly
and I said
Maria you are special
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight

Trapeze

TRAPEZE
I put on my best dress
The one I can move in
Under the big top of the night
I climb up to the trapeze
I rub chalk on my fingertips
And I steady myself for flight
You're miles away on your swing
You glide toward me then fade back again
Breathe in in in
I'm flying through the air
No net below me
I can make it from here
If you reach out and catch me
It's so quiet
That I can hear the wind
My arms stretching and pulling me high
At the still point
I will release the bar
And we'll pass through the roof of the night
The big moon is in my eyes
Your hands stretch out to mine
Breathe in in in
I'm flying through the air
No net below me
I can make it from here
When you reach out and catch me

WISHING WELL
Don't call me
But I need to hear your voice talking to me
Don't call me
Cuz its not you that I'm aching for
If you don't see, or hear, or call
Then it’s just me in this wishing well
It's just me talking to myself
It's just me in this wishing well
Are my two feet still pacing this floor
I pick up your photo and count to three
Vein to vein we wed, forever more
And now my veins are collapsing, they’re thirsty, thirsty
If you don't see, or hear, or call
Then it’s just me in this wishing well
It's just me talking to myself
It's just me in this wishing well
A fever of fear runs inside to out
Outside the crickets are angels singing
If I could just fall asleep and drown in my own dreams
I could be stupid stupid, not know any better
And if you don't see or hear or call
Then it’s just me in this wishing well
It's just me talking to myself
It's just me in this wishing well
It's just me talking to myself
It's just me in this wishing well
Throw my penny in and make a wish

God Watch My Back

God Watch My Back
He came from Carson City
With a thirst for a new life
He was walking down the highway
I was driving by
But I'm so damn careless
I fell into his lonely eyes
Till his arms were my horizon
His promises stretched for miles
And I fell in love good
And I fell in love hard
But now I need to run
And I need to run far
God watch my back
Cover my tracks
I need your help
To help myself
I did what I done
Cuz his love was killing me
He said I was his river
I made sure that he was right
He drank my kisses in the morning
Swam rolling currents every night
But I didn't give up
I didn't leave his side
Till he'd gotten every drop
Even the tears in my eyes
God watch my back...
The rain poured down. covered the sounds
No one could hear the pain and fear
The first time I knelt. T he next time I prayed
The last time he struck I walked away
God watch my back
Cover my tracks
I need your help
To help myself
I did what I done
Bless my gun
Cuz his love was killing me

Lay Me Down

Lay Me Down
It started in New Jersey baby
Felt like a mosquito bite
All swollen and itchy and longing
To scratch everything in sight
Would it be putting it mildly
To say you got under my skin
But they don't make an ointment
For the shape you leave me in
Now I'm feeling dizzy
And I'm moving kind of slow
So
Lay me down upon your bed
Night is out but the sky's still red
This lonely world is far from here
And the cure is so near
So lay me down
I'm sitting up at night
Got the radio on
And it doesn't matter what they're playing
I want you more with every song
I never fall but I’m starting to sway
Lay me down upon your bed
Night is out but the sky's still red
This lonely world is far from here
And the cure is so near
So lay me down
Lay your hands
Say the words
A greater plan
Draws us here
Lay me down upon your bed
Night is out but the sky's still red
This lonely world is far from here
And the cure is so near
So lay me down
